Today's guest has such a fun project to share with you guys. Laura from Housewife in Town is such a great writer, and an even better photographer. And this will probably sound weird, but I feel like we have a connection since we both have little redheads!
Enough of my jabbering...

Denim.
It allures me. It makes me want to roll up the cuffs of my blue jeans and dance in wet grass.
Or buy a whole stack of jeans that would never fit me, cut them into six-inch squares and fashion them into a quilt, complete with fashion statement pockets. Sure!
So that's what I did. Want to see how?
The finished product is amazing. I'm hoping it will get some attention at the local fair and frontier days. And all for less than $20.
Upcycling is awesome.
This is a simple tutorial, not an all-inclusive, all-you-need-to-know guide to sewing a rag quilt. :) One other important detail would be the special denim needle you'll need to sew through this thick stuff. One needle already bit the dust in the making of this quilt. RIP. ***********************************
Oh. Em. Gee. How cool does that rag quilt look!?!?
And I told you that her photographs were great, didn't I? I need some lessons from Laura :)

Wow! I love this upcycle, its so much fun. I have lot of small project to linkup. How many can we link??
ReplyDeleteCute!!!! That would be fun to make for a toddler - they would love hiding things in the pockets!
ReplyDeleteI know this is older but is the fray only on one side or both?
ReplyDeleteThe fray is only on one side :)
ReplyDeleteNo flannel backing?
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole!
DeleteLaura's didn't have a backing, but a flannel backing would make it super comfy!!
Thanks! I have made rag quilts before but I have a huge pile of denim jeans I have been saving and thought I would tackle that. I have been looking for ideas and suggestions on pinterest and found your blog. Love the pocket idea!
DeleteI just finished mine and wanted to offer a TIP. My blanket frayed GREAT in the washing machine. However, it completely clogged the pump in my machine. My hubs had to completely take it apart to get it fixed. I was very lucky it didn't fry the pump. It almost did. Unfortunately it was a surprise for him and he now knows I was working on making him something...awesome. Love the blanket but I might invest in washing it at a laundromat next time to get it to fray.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great pics and very simple steps! This is a great quilt and way to upcycle jeans.
ReplyDeleteIs the flannel backing made up of flannel squares sewn to denim ones, or a whole panel?
ReplyDeleteI have been saving denim for a quilt like this since my children were young. I had the idea in my head, but this is EXACTLY what I had in mind. Thanks for sharing.
